DIY Bathroom Makeover Ideas on a Budget
A bathroom makeover can give your space a fresh new look without having to spend a lot of money. If you’re looking for DIY bathroom makeover ideas, there are plenty of cheap ways to update your space without breaking the bank. In this article, we’ll explore several DIY bathroom makeover ideas, including updating your medicine cabinet, updating your bathroom fan, adding a shower door, and painting your bathroom. These bathroom updates will work for a small space or a large space. Plus, they don’t require doing major renovations like replacing your bathroom vanity or bathroom flooring.

Update your medicine cabinet
The medicine cabinet is one of the most overlooked elements in a bathroom, but it can also be one of the most impactful. A new medicine cabinet can change the entire look of your bathroom and it’s a great way to access valuable storage space. You can update your medicine cabinet in a few different ways, depending on your budget and the look you’re going for.
If you have an old medicine cabinet that needs a facelift, consider painting it. You can use a paint specifically designed for metal or wood surfaces, depending on the material of your medicine cabinet. Before you paint, remove any hardware and sand the surface to create a smooth finish. Then, prime the surface and apply your paint. You can also add new hardware for a complete makeover. This DIY project won’t take long at all to complete.
Another great idea is to replace your medicine cabinet entirely. This can be a more expensive option, but it can completely transform your bathroom and give it a more modern look. Look for a cabinet that matches the style of your bathroom and provides ample storage space for your needs.
In my case, we decided to replace the medicine cabinet entirely. Upon purchasing our house it looked like the original medicine cabinet was still installed and it wasn’t very appealing at all. Therefore, we replaced it with a barndoor medicine cabinet from Home Depot that immediately gave the bathroom a new feel and cost less than $100.

Update your bathroom fan
A bathroom fan is an important element of your bathroom, but it can also be an eyesore. If your bathroom fan is old or outdated, consider updating it to match the style of your bathroom. You can replace the cover of your bathroom fan with a new one that matches the decor of your bathroom.
To replace the cover of your bathroom fan, first, remove the old cover. Most covers are held in place with screws or clips, so be sure to have a screwdriver and pliers on hand. Once you’ve removed the old cover, measure the dimensions of the opening and purchase a new cover that fits.
When choosing a new cover, consider the style of your bathroom. If you have a modern bathroom, a sleek and simple cover will work best. If you have a more traditional bathroom, a cover with decorative accents or scrollwork may be more appropriate.
Additionally, like with the medicine cabinet, you have the option of replacing the fan entirely, which is what we opted for.
The original fan was an eyesore, to say the least. It was brown, dusty, etc, so it had to go. We replaced it with a Bluetooth speaker LED bathroom fan, which eliminates the need for a night light and it allows you to listen to your favorite music or podcast when showering/taking a bath.
The one we purchased was a little over $100, but there are cheaper options available on Amazon.

Add a shower door
If you have a shower with a curtain, consider replacing the curtain with a shower door. This can give your bathroom a more polished look and prevent water from splashing outside of the shower. Plus, you don’t have to worry about constantly buying new shower curtains. There are a few different types of shower doors to choose from, including framed and frameless options.
A framed shower door has a metal frame around the edges, while a frameless shower door is made entirely of glass. Frameless shower doors are more expensive, but they can make a small bathroom feel larger and more open. If you’re on a budget, a framed shower door is a good option.
Before you install a shower door, measure the opening of your shower to ensure that the door will fit properly. You’ll also need to drill holes in the tile or wall to install the door.
Paint your bathroom
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to give your bathroom a makeover is by painting it. A fresh coat of paint can make a big difference in the overall look of your bathroom. When choosing a paint color, consider the style of your bathroom and the colors of your fixtures and accessories.
If you have a small bathroom, consider using a light or neutral color to make the space feel larger. If you have a larger bathroom, you can use darker or brighter colors to add some personality and depth to the space. Be sure to use high quality paint that is designed for high-moisture areas, such as the bathroom space.
Replace your toilet
Replacing your toilet can be a relatively inexpensive way to give your bathroom a makeover. A new toilet can not only improve the look of your bathroom but also help you save water and money on your water bill.
When comes to the toilet I’m super picky about it. As a renter, I would always replace the toilet seat upon move-in, but as a homeowner, I opted to purchase a new toilet entirely.
The original toilet was definitely disgusting, it was dirty, rusting, and even leaking. It was a 2 piece toilet and we opted to go for a one-piece model, which at the time I was able to catch on sale for a little over $100.
Conclusion
In conclusion, a DIY bathroom remodel doesn’t have to cost a fortune, it’s possible to create the bathroom of your dreams on a tight budget. With a little bit of creativity and some DIY know-how, you can transform your entire bathroom into a stylish and functional space without spending a ton of money. Whether you choose to update your medicine cabinet, replace your bathroom fan, add a shower door, paint your bathroom, or replace your toilet, there are plenty of affordable options available. Remember to consider the style of your whole bathroom and the needs of your family when choosing which DIY projects to tackle. With these DIY bathroom makeover ideas on a budget, you’ll have a refreshed and updated bathroom in no time.
